15th,16th & 17th July.....Pictured Rocks National Shoreline and Manisitque.....

Main Street Munising....
Our campsite is about 24 miles south of here and is approx half way between here and Manisitque the 2 main towns of this area of the Upper Peninsular.....
First stop on our visit to the Pictured Rock National Shoreline is Sand Point a lovely beach area on Lake Superior....so many times we say we can't believe these lakes are not the ocean !!!!
Mamma duck and her offspring enjoying a beach walk....
The Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse...
Built in 1856....this is the only wooden lighthouse in the world, now privately owned after extensive renovation...
The Old Coastguard Station at Sand Point, now the National Park HQ for this area....there is an old lifeboat here and while looking at it we met a lovely old gent visiting with his family, he used to be a coastguard and regaled us with stories about lifeboats and coastguards.....
On through the park to Miners Falls. a mile hike to the first view point....
Then 65 steps down to the lower viewing platform, great falls and good exercise.....
This is part of the pictured rocks viewed from Miners Castle a short drive from Miners Falls....
Another shot of the pictured rocks from Miners Castle...
Pictured Rocks area has many similarities to us to the Painted Desert in Arizona...
And now for something completely different but love it....

Back into town from the park....
And time to buy some more pasties from Muldoons....with the break in blog posts I can't remember if I have mentioned that the states we have visited recently are heavily, no pun intended, into pasties.....big influence from the early settlers of  the Cornish Tin Miners...yes they were as delicious as all the others we have sampled !!!!! We have had a pastie fest !!
Saturday 16th July...
Oh my goodness what a shock temperatures went down to freezing overnight, extra layers on the bed but another beautiful sunny morning...
This is Sable Falls 43 miles from Munising at the north end of Pictured Rocks National Park...and good exercise after yesterdays pasties as 170 steps down and of course up...pretty falls but hard to get god pic due to trees but hey ho that's the way it is...
This area is known as Log Slide an area of high dunes, it doesn't look that high but it is 300ft from the top to the lake.... back in the late 1800's logging companies set up a log shoot to send the timber down to the lake to then be transported on barges to the lumber mills....most of the white and red cedar and white pine where felled but the trees where reintroduced when this area became a national park...
I thought this was one of those "Kodak Moments"....
Beautiful tranquil Lake Superior....
And much like the area at Sleeping Bear Dunes....notices say do not go down the steep 300 foot drop to the lake but of course folks do and maybe we might have when we were young and foolish...
Onto Sable Beach for our lunch sandwich and a 1.7 mile walk to the Au Sable Light station....the darker area beyond the pebbles is the remains of one of the many ship wrecks in this area....
Au Sable Light Station....
This is part of the shoreline on this stretch of Lake Superior and so pretty....
Apparently ship wreck artefacts can bee seen on this stretch of beach but not to us but it's a very pretty beach so happy to have a walk...
Most of the verges on the park roads have these wild pretty flowers....
Sunday 17th July and what a difference a day makes  as us Brits know so well....heavy rains today for our visit to Manistique.
Managed to get a shot of The 1922 Manisitque Pumping Station...
The Manistique Lighthouse on Lake Michigan...
Our lunchtime spot today, reminiscent of family days out at Hayling Island in a British summer....but although wet it's still high 70's....
As we keep saying can't believe this is a lake and not the ocean...
More heavy rain and as we sit and have our night cap in our home on wheels  listening to our music the song playing is I Can't Stand The Rain...spooky...
So for now until we get "hooked' up again it's goodnight from..
The wet but happy campers...

  1. Hi Sue & Michael,
Just caught up and enjoying your great pics.
I must say you have made me feel a tad guilty with comments re your walks,so I have put the boots in the car and setting off for a walk in the Wyre Forest.( haven`t had any pasties ,but plenty of over indulgence)
Sorry about the heavy rain, but only fair that you take your share.
    Keep on singing and enjoy.
    Cheers,
    Ann & Dave
